Drishyam - Malayalam movie

My wife always felt that movies were supposed to take you away into another world, they were meant to be extraordinary.

And therefore she branded Malayalam movies as "man gets up, man brushes, bathes, man goes to work, man gets home and sleeps" - meaning they were filled with the daily routine of life as we know it. They were not larger than life and therefore "boring"

I on the other hand would gladly give a hand or a leg to defend Malayalam movies. Yes they are "mundane", if you call, not having a bikini clad woman thrusting her hips at you to kuthu songs, or the protagonist thumping up 100 baddies and tossing them about like flies, or 200 men and women dancing in shiny clothes and weird costumes, mundane.

Anyway this Lal ettan starrer created that much needed dent in my wife's opinion about Malayalam movies. As always, the way every actor played his character was amazing - the arrogant and power corrupted police man stood out - I started hating him like I hated some real person.

But more than anything else - the plot and the screen play deserve mention, or rather deserves applause! The story is brilliant and the way it is taken through the scenes is fascinating.

And the most important thing to me about Malayalam movies that was superbly shown in this movie - human emotions - raw, unadulterated, non righteous, true human emotions! I carried way this particular message (me translating it is not even 0.5% of the actual dialogue presented by Lal ettan) - "For every man what is dear to him is the only important thing. It will be protected at any cost, even if it means doing something harmful in the eyes of others! In that context, there is no right or wrong. One mans right is another mans wrong - that's the only confidently state-able truth!" I had goose bumps by the time this dialogue was over.

The portrayal of family life in a typical Mallu christian family, the locale, all weaved into a beautiful story. No one would expect that such a mellow story would suddenly go into a roller coaster dip of excitement and then the pure logical sequencing of events - it was a pleasure beyond what I can describe through words.

The kids have performed extremely well. If I were to talk about a small blip - I would say it was a little bit of Meena's over acting - but it wasn't too conspicuous,it felt like the "dhrishti pottu" of the movie.

It was a complete down to earth movie with no glamour of any sort depending purely on the script and the actors performance to take it through.

The climax elicited claps from my wife (she would have whistled if she knew how to) and this dialogue - Mallu movies are good as well and from me it elicited the satisfaction of time spent well and thoughts to mull over and a list of Mallu movies to be watched.
