I chanced upon an article today. Some where in the largest democracy in the world, the USA, this happened. Ok ok, I know you'd say it isn't the largest democracy, India is!. But when I mean largest,. I mean it in terms of the largeness of democracy as a concept, and this post is once of the reasons why I feel so.
Back to the story, an Asian immigrant whose work permit was in processing had visited a bar. Some kind of tussle ensued and our Asian man was beaten up savagely by the bouncer. He was beaten so bad, that a part of his skull had to be removed - the picture of the Asian man was horrifying, he had a head shaped like a half filled football, one side rounded and the other deflated. He was also in and out of coma and was suffering from other brain related problems after the bashing.
He went to court, and I assumed that from here on I would hate the article, but I was in for a surprise. The court ruled in his favour and asked the bar to cough up millions in treatment costs, lawyer costs and an additional amount for the mental agony that the man would face for the rest of his life.
It wasn't the judgement that I was surprised by, what surprised me was the judgement passed for an immigrant whose permit was still not done. He was not a citizen, technically he was a stranger in the USA and still the country chose to dole out justice over the decision to stand up for its not so nice citizen.
Now that's what a true democracy should stand for - Equality. Fairness at its best. It should stand for the values it is built upon. That is the message a nation needs to send out to its citizens. That is the example a nation should set for its inhabitants and that is the kind of aspirations that the nation should set for its citizens.
Respect!!!
