Paramesh

Bliss. He felt nothing. And that was bliss. Not his failures, not his wrong doers failures, not his loved ones failures, nothing mattered. This was bliss, being oblivious to everything and everyone around. This set right everything that had gone wrong.

Paramesh wasn't always like this. He had sought other methods to rid himself of all his problems, but none of them worked as well as this.

What were his problems? Oh so many, like how his father had abandoned them all of a sudden for a mistress. How all his fathers wealth was squandered. He had expected that all the wealth would come to him and that he would always live the flashy and comfortable life had had just a few years ago.

But like names written on the sand in a beach, it was there a few moments ago and then it was gone. His mother had no one to go to, so she returned to her mothers place - always open for the needy. Luckily his sister had escaped the worst. She was married off when their father had been a different man - a doting father and rich business owner. The dowry alone that went with the wedding would be enough to set her up for life.

If only a part of that money had been given to him. His parents had put in him in various colleges, he always ended up having too much fun. Studies to him were a waste of time, too less a thing to achieve for his intellect. All his friends had gone on and started working and he sat laughing at them, he had his dads business to take care of.

Today he cursed his mother. Why had the woman fought with his dad about a small affair that he had had? If she had let it be, maybe he would still have the comfortable life he was entitled to. And he cursed his grand mother and swore at her. His words spewed venom, they were not able to provide for him.

He blamed the world for its unfairness. His mother was dead worried for her son. In spite of all his bitterness she tried to help. She went to every temple possible, tried every god mans suggestions without an inch of hesitation or second thought.

And then he found the solution. Ethanol, ethyl alchohol. In its various hues and colours and forms. It gave him joy. It numbed the pain and kept out the noise. He didn't feel inferior anymore. He didn't feel poor anymore. He harassed the two women in his life, mother and grand mother into financing his drinking needs and he at last found the peace he craved for.

He punished his mother for doing him wrong. He enjoyed seeing her chide him for his binges. He was punishing her for doing this to him. He gave her the choicest of swear words and made sure he hit her where it hurt. And she went to temples to pray for him.

He started the day by 10. Alchohol induced sleep blank and devoid of any dreams or pain until 4 PM. Eat and sleep until 7. And the go off for the night binges. The old hags would wait up for him until 11 PM. He would sometimes have to be brought up the stairs. They cursed him and pitied their lives, but never once did they leave him to rot. They made sure he had his food and put him to sleep amid outbursts and screams.

And so he had found the antidote to all his problems in a bottle.

Grand mom passed away, bless her soul. His mom was secretly happy for her. How she wished that she too could move away to a more peaceful place.

Moms wish came true. She joined her mother in a few months as she fainted and hit her head on the floor of her mothers home.

Paramesh turned over a new leaf. He quit drinking after he was picked up by the police and out into a rehab centre for convicts. He was picked on and was roughed up. He was at the receiving end for once and he was a changed man.

He joined his father who had started his own small business again.

He cursed how the old hags had ditched him and let him drink away without so much as a care for him.
