Success - what is it to you?

Many a man has chased what he thought was success and getting it, only to realize that which he was chasing was not what he wanted, and it was too late to go back ; suicide, depression, alcoholism, substance abuse and bitterness followed.

In a society where success is always answered to these questions :-

1. How much money do you make?
2. What is your designation at work?
3. Which brand of car do you own?
4. Do you have your own house? If so in which locality and how many rooms?
5. If in India - which school does your kid study in?
6. Which coll did you graduate from?

So basically a guy who passed out from a second level college, is still a small time employee of a small time firm without his car or own house is a failure.

The sadness of this is that you are made to believe it yourself - because everybody says it is so, your friends, parents, neighbors, girlfriends.

I have only one thing to answer this - ask everyone to buzz out of your life for a minute. Imagine you all alone, with all of the above in perfect order - ivy league college degree, big car and huge house, GM of a world class company - leaving home every morning by 8, slogging and coming home by 12 every night to crash and leave again next morning.

Imagine living in the US of A (every Indians dream destination) without ever being able to spend time with you parents and siblings but yes of course able to send tons of cash instead. If that suits your lifestyle - you are bang on track, keep going. But is you feel sick to the gut imagining a life like that, it's time to take stock of what is important to you and leave the path you are on and take one that will lead you to success that is defined by you. It could be more time for family, pursuing a career that gives you fulfillment, or simply living at a place that you feel is the place you want to be at.

Define success in your terms, not your neighbors, friends, parents or kids; for achieving their dreams will make them happy, not you.
